Phobias and fears are produced by internal anxieties that become associated with particular situations. Some may seem to serve a genuine purpose (fear of heights, fire, etc) - mostly however, they appear to be completely irrational!

A phobia is an intense fear of something that, in reality, poses little or no actual danger. If you have a phobia, you probably realize that your fear is unreasonable, yet you still can’t control your feelings. Just thinking about the thing you fear may make you anxious. And when you’re actually exposed to your phobia, the terror is automatic and overwhelming.

Chances are you are being brave by looking at this page- yes, phobias can be irrational, and yes, maybe you have a spider phobia and cannot risk looking at the page because there may just be an image of a spider. We KNOW it is not logical to be scared of a computer image, but then phobias- or the way we behave with a phobia rarely put logic first.

Phobias are fears that are created through association to frightening situations; this can be a one off event or can be related to peers or parents fears or can even have a logical base- getting in an aeroplane really shouldn’t make sense! However, we can naturally be scared and move through the fear sensibly and rationally, but with a phobia we will totally avoid the situation at all costs and being rational or practical does not become a consideration; makes sense with aeroplanes to some degree but what about applying it to fear of buttons?!

Phobias are generally caused by an event recorded by the amygdala and hippocampus and labelled as deadly or dangerous.  But sometimes we can never remember the event although the fear remains

Phobias and fears can be so nerve-wracking that you may go to great lengths to avoid it – inconveniencing yourself or even changing your lifestyle.

Normal coping mechanisms don't work, and the need to avoid the objects or situations that cause anxiety can be so intense that they drastically interfere with daily life even though they know the response is inappropriate.

The most common type of Phobias/fears include:

Animal phobias. Animal phobias are fears caused by an animal or insect. Examples include fear of snakes, fear of spiders, fear of rodents, and fear of dogs.

Natural environment phobias. Natural environment phobias are fears cued by objects found in nature. Examples include fear of heights, fear of storms, fear of water, and fear of the dark.

Situational phobias. Situational phobias are fears triggered by a specific situation. Examples include fear of enclosed spaces (claustrophobia), fear of elevators, fear of flying, fear of dentists, fear of driving, fear of tunnels, and fear of bridges.

Blood-Injection-Injury phobia. Blood-injection-injury phobia involves fear of blood, fear or injury, or a fear of shots or another medical procedure.

Social phobias: Social phobia, is fear of social situations where you may be embarrassed or judged. A fear of public speaking, eating or drinking in public and talking to strangers are common examples social phobias.

Phobia comes from the Greek: phóbos, meaning "fear" or "morbid fear".

Phobias - How hypnotherapy can help

I cannot thank you enough! Because of the work we did, I was finally able to relax and enjoy a holiday without the anxiety and stress of past years. We were located right in the middle of a jungle setting and there were birds aplenty both within the grounds and yes even in the restaurant!  This year however was totally different for me as I was able to stay calm and remain sitting without the need to run, by the end of the two weeks I was hardly even noticing them.
