Bournemouth hypnotherapy - eating disordersYoung men with eating disorders are not having the assistance or backup needed due to the sentiments relating to the problem as a "women's illness", suggest researchers.

The BBC reported that men are under diagnosed and under treated for anorexia as well as other eating disorders, in spite of making up approximately a quarter of cases, a UK study states.  Frontline health workers provide a crucial role in spotting eating disorders in young men, they report in BMJ Open.

Men are under pressure to possess the "ideal" body shape image, states a charity.  Research workers from the University of Oxford and University of Glasgow surveyed 39 young people aged sixteen to twenty-five, comprising ten men, with regard to their {|stories} of diagnosis, therapy and support for eating disorders.

Researchers believe young men with eating disorders were "under diagnosed, under treated and under researched".  This is partially as a result of the men themselves were ignorant of the symptoms, in spite of making themselves sick, skipping meals for days and compulsive calorie counting, they reported.

"Our findings suggest that men may experience particular problems in recognising that they may have an eating disorder as a result of the continuing cultural construction of eating disorders as uniquely or predominantly a female problem," said Dr Ulla Raisanen and Dr Kate Hunt.

Assured Effects Hypnotherapy - eating disordersOne man stated he believed eating disorders solely afflicted "fragile teenage girls"; a second explained he assumed eating disorders were "something girls got"; while another was advised by his doctor to "man up".

A number of others noted they frequently were forced to wait considerable time for specialist referral and had on occasion been misdiagnosed.

GPs as well as other professionals for example teachers provide a crucial role in improving the outlook for men with eating disorders by questioning misguided beliefs, the research workers explained. Eating disorders include anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa; and binge eating disorder.

One estimate puts the cost to the NHS of treating eating disorders at £70m.

Commenting on the research, Leanne Thorndyke, of the Beat eating disorders charity, said a wider section of society is coming under pressure over their body image.

Poole hypnotherapy - eating disorders "The pressures on body weight and body image are affecting a much wider range of people, which obviously includes men," she told BBC News.

"There is more pressure on men from magazines with celebrities and male models to have the 'ideal' body image," she added. "Boys and men tend to want to be bigger and more muscular and toned, which is a different ideal to women."

She said people are "bombarded by images every day from all angles, something that just wasn't there only a few years ago", which can "negatively impact some people".

Andy Cox from Assured Effects hypnotherapy says that at any time in the UK over 1 million people can be suffering from eating disorders. This is an incredibly hiigh number. Many sufferers hide their eating disordered from friends, family and loved ones.
